Slamming the rear hatch lid.

So what is the deal with the rear hatch? Everybody says slam it which I will agree will sometimes cause the lights to go out but does anyone know why it helps or how to fix it? I would think if slamming it would temporarily cut the lights there should also be a permanent fix back there.

The rear hatch
Is there a sensor back there like the ones in the side doors?

There are two Door jam switches on the rear hatch. One on each side. There are no sensors in the doors, there are switches.

Thanks for the reply
I picked up a low voltage tester. ( the one with he battery/light and probes all in one).I'll see if the switches are bad.
I also will spay down the button in the lock with CRC CONTACT cleaner.

The lights don't act up all the time.

My guess is switches are fine but the contacts in locks are gummed up.

I'll pull all the locks and switches. spray down button in switch with contact cleaner/test switches and that should take care of it. (hopefully)

It will be a breeze taking it apart now. I just finished all 5 door power lock repairs.

There's a switch in each latch. It's a very basic switch with a ball bearing on a spring. All it does is open or close the ground circuit for the door ajar warning and anti-theft circuit. Over time that ball gets gummed up and sticks, sometimes slamming the liftgate loosens it.

Im having the same issue. Pretty sure its the rear hatch because the lock mechanism is also hooped. Am i correct in thinking that if i just clip the wires to each sensor and twist them together that will solve the issue? Imbok if the rear hatch sensors think its closed all the time i just dont want it open all the time. Currently if i open any door in the vehicle the lights stay on for twenty mins. If i open the hatch lights dont go on. Is this an indicater that is where the problem is?

Be careful where you use WD40. It contains waxes that are left behind to continue lubrication even after the oil is gone. Those waxes can cake up after repeated uses and gum up stuff good. It also is a dirt trap.

When I used to have a gunsmithing business, I called WD40 'the gunsmith's friend' because it gummed up guns so bad from repeated use that the mechanisms would no longer work and people had to bring them to me for disassembly and cleaning to get it all out. Money maker.
