Can anyone tell me how to remove the bendix drive from a 1957, 312 Starter, all I know is its the newer style drive but I cannot figure out how to swap it to the new starter!
It's real easy if it's not rusted on. I did it today just to see if I remembered how . Stand the starter on it's end with the spring facing up. Put on some gloves or wrap a rag around it or you may pinch your hand like I did, because I forgot that could happen . Push down on the spring about 3/4 of an inch and you will see a pin. remove the pin, they are not tight most of the time as they are covered while in use. Release the spring slowly , then slide the whole assembly off of the shaft. Install it on the new starter in the same way ,replace the pin and you are ready to install the starter. jim
