I have the code p0683 on my 2000 ford 7.3.. I replaced all my glow plus today, and reset it. Yet it still comes up and says it is the GPCM. The truck runs perfect, all though the light comes up and needs to be off for smogging in california. What could it be?
Welcome to FTE. The California trucks and Ex's don't have a glow plug relay (GPR) but a Glow Plug Control Module (GPCM) so something is still not right and it's throwing a code. Most of us have the GPR style system. It's a little late tonight but hopefully someone with a similar setup will chime in soon.
ChunderDownUnder: Thank you for your response! I looked at the two sites. Regarding the second one, does my truck have a Glow Plug Relay? Can someone clarify that for me. Also can some explain the whole glow plug computer system, what parts are there to pick from, what are the symptoms, etc? My truck works perfect as I said before. It apparently had one glow plug out.. #6.. although it now has 8 new ones.
Ponyboychris: Thank you as well. I went to Kragen/O’Reileys today, that they guys there didn’t know what was up and said they had no idea what I was talking about. So I told them I thought it was the GPCM, after 20 mintues of not finding that they said the only thing they had was a glow plug relay , and a solenoid as well. After hearing they don’t even have them in California trucks, what’s up with that! I am almost certain it is the GPCM, so I read on a post just recently to check the pigtails on wiring harness to make sure it’s not the problem first, than replace the GPCM. How hard is it to replace those to find out? Is it beneficial?
You are welcome, like I said, I'm not too familiar with the GPCM system. Unless you run into an employee at a chain auto store that is an owner of a PSD, they usually don't have a clue about our engine package. They might want to sell you a set of spark plugs for Pete's sake...
The GPCM is marked "or this one" in the photo. The relay in front (marked "this one") in the photo is the Air Intake Heater (AIH) Relay and does not effect your condition.
But if it was the GPCM wouldn't the truck not work? What exactly does that do?
Your truck will start or start rough with the GPCM not functioning right. All it does is activate the glowplugs to heat the cylinders in order to start the truck. It can start without the glowplugs all working, just run rough until the heat builds up in the cylinders to smooth out the idle. I had a bad relay on my truck and it still would start but idled like crap for a couple minutes. The nice thing about the GPCM over the relay is that it will set a code and light up the SES light on the dash. Relays won't set off the SES light.
The truck had a glow plug that was out. It told me, which is the job of the GPCM. Would it still be able to read if it wasn't working? Also it starts perfect. Also it can't be the relay since it idles good. Pretty much it drives like a new truck, just it has the SES light on with that code. I've heard a few people say it could be the wiring harnest as well. Is this possible? How hard is this to test?
For those of you that throw the same code. I found out after swapping a friend of mines GPCM with mine, that his after sitting for an hour was really hot. And mine that I just turned off was cold. Meaning it wasn't working. I know it's not much of a "mechanic's test".. but it works, and it will save you alot of time. I wish I knew that prior to everything!
