I finally got my "vintage" cruise control installed. My bro got my a cruise control off ebay that was made in the mid '80's. It was kind of "spartan" on extras but was pretty straightforward to install. The only thing was it was designed to where it could have been installed on an RV so the wires were about 30 feet long I had to just bundle them up and hide them in a kick panel. Anyway, after a HOT day in the garage of final wiring and checkin I went for a test drive. I thought it wasnt workin at first cause the buttons are SO sensitive. If you hold them too long it starts accellerating but I got it figured out.
Now onto the part I kind of need help with. I couldnt mount the cruise actuator inside the cab like I wanted to cause it would have put the cable in too much of a bind. So, I mounted it under the mastercyl and booster on the driver's inner fender. It is black like the inner fender and booster and such so it dont stand out too much, but I'd like to camoflauge it a little more. Any suggestions as to what I can cover it with? Dad suggested I get an old type oil can and cut it to where it can slide over it.
Anyway I hope everyone else is gettin ready for the PF show. Now all I got to do is get her lined up and cleaned up. I've given up on the bedcover til I get back.
Need to know for my own info, where is the speed sensor is attached, on the drive shaft?
Camouflage ideas;
Coolant recovery tank, old fire extinguisher body, beer can, windshield washer reservoir (best), ign control box with guts cut out (wgco), voltage regulator wgco, cruise control actuator.

Yeah, it had the old magnets that saftey wire to the driveshaft and then you make your bracket hang down and the speed sensor has a set parameter that you go by to get it right. It only has 2 wires goin to it. It's just a magnetic pickup type setup. It works!! I already have a windshield reseboir bag infront of where this thing is at. Dont have much room for alot of stuff. Its goin to take some pondering.............
I still think the K>K> is the best fix and you will stay under the hood longer so you can get some of the other things fixed as well, you know you love to tenker around under the hood of these old FORD trucks.
Congrats on getting the cruise installed. Several years ago AXracer made a really cool cover for his AC hoses out of a stainless steel dog bowl. It probably wouldn't work to cover up your cruise can though.
A lot of times when I'm looking for some kind of idea I take a walk up and down the aisles at the local big box hardware store.
Yes, take measurements and stick a small tape measure in you pocket when you are out shopping. Check out the cookware aisles for small metal pans and also the sporting goods, pet supplies, gardening etc. Keep an open mind for creative re-use ideas. Be glad you didn't mount the actuator inside, they are usually quite noisy in operation.
well seeing as ya got it on , shouldn't ya turn it off before ya hit something now ??????????? still got the chev , or are ya going to do the 4,6 ???????????????
nah, I still got the sbc for now. I'm wanting to get my 351W in it "someday" I got to get some time/money to do it. I drove it to town to get the front end lined up and the sensor is a little off? Its got that antique pickup that uses magnets off of the driveshaft. I've got a speed sensor that goes on the tailshaft of my trans, I'm goin to try to do some OHM's reading and see if they are the same and I can use the more "modern" one as its alot easier to calibrate and such.
aw hades somewhere if i haven't disposed of it i got the hand throttle from that 56 f-6 around here . you can put it on , and no fancy stuff , you'll have redneck cruise control . pull it out to the desired speed , then twist to lock in place ................... i dunno about you but the 4.6 swap is kinda daunting due to all the dain electrical required . great engines , capable of way more than most peep's realize , but lordy all that wiring .........................
