replacing pitman arm

i was wondering how hard this would be on a 4x4 4.6. Will i need air tools to get the steering shaft bolt off? Can a puller get in there to pull the arm off? Any suggestions would be great.

You need to unbolt the steeringbox off the frame. The puller will not pass without it.

Impact, pitman arm puller, big hammer and theere you go

I'm just curious. What is it doing that makes you want to change it? If it's making a really bad squeaking noise, I know what might help.

My mechanic said that it needed to be replaced when i had him do the 02 sensors. When i looked at it the ball joint boot was all torn apart. I agree that it needs to be done.

Also what size is the bolt that holds the pitman arm to the steering box?

Oh okay. Yeah that needs to be replaced. I have the same truck, and that boot started making a terrible squeaking sound every single time I turned it at slow speeds like in a parking lot not too long after I bought it. I went to the auto parts and got one of those needles with a grease fitting and injected grease into the boot. Never had another problem. But unfortunately that isn't gonna help you if it's torn apart. But it may help somebody else. Good luck. I imagine that's a pretty big job.

Very easy job.

You unbolt the 2 front bolt for the steering box, lose enough the last on the back to swivel steering box.

Remove the center link form the idle arm and from thr pitman arm, drop it down.

1h job

Breaker Bar, or a long cheater pipe. I never use an impact on them.
Like the others said, remove 2 of the 3 bolts from the box and loosen the other one to get the puller on there. Shouldn't be more than a 25 minute job.....
