like it says guys, the truck shifts ok through the first three gears, but going from 3rd to overdrive takes some time. it was kind of like this when i bought the truck, but seems much worse now. the fluid level is perfect and does not look or smell burnt. truck has 150,000 miles on it. i was wondering what i might do to fix the problem without replacing the trans. would a dp help any? or a shift kit? my guess was it is all in the TQ, i know i am losing power b/c of it, and it seems somewhat louder than before(you know when it is idling). sorry for the long post, and thanks for your time and knowledge.
the early 99's had a bad TC in them from the start..they rattle like a can full of marbles...could be a TC but if it shifts fine till OD..your clutches could be getting bad in OD...if thats the case and you try a new TC and the clutches let go..your new TC will be shot...at any rate here is a bump..maybe Mark Kovalsky will stop by and tell you more about it...
alot of the time i will drive it with the OD off untill 50 mph or. just for the fact that when i am taking off on the four lane i like it to keep the speed. anyway thanks for the advice. guess i will baby it around some more.
Jason, has it always done this or is it just starting? Before I got my DP Tuner(no guys I'm not trying to sell him on a chip...),my torque converter was very slow at locking up,it's the nature of some of the beasts, tuning can certainly help with that,if it has always done it,your TC might be getting weak.
it just seems like it is taking it awhile to shift, i thought it was the design to make the shift less noticable. im just worried about it, because the way i see it is the truck if fine, and the tranny is the weak link.
The torque converter lock is combined with the 3-4 shift. That makes it seem like one long shift. A tuner can change this, there really isn't anything wrong.
With the superchip it mit be on a tow mode. This will keep the shift point higher. I had an early superchip that pluged into the port and hated it because it screwed up the shifting all around the shift points and made it slip. Got rid of it and back to normal.
My truck as well as a friends truck have been doing the same thing lately. As well as what Mark calls "shift flair". Where when it shifts into OD it revs up a little like its slipping between gears.
