wow - your CEL has been on long enough to burn out? Might wanna get that looked at!

I don't remember the exact position, but if you are replacing bulbs, save yourself the frustration and just replace them all (If I remember correctly, there are 6 total)

I spent the hour to replace one backlight, only to have the one on the other side burn out the next week. Round two, I just replaced all the old bulbs.

See my signature for a manual. The owner's manual shows where every bulb is located.

Shine a flashlight on the instrument cluster and you'll be able to see all of the writing that gets lit up when the bulbs are on. Also, the CEL should light up when you first turn the key on. If it doesn't then it's either burned out like you suspect, or the previous owner removed the bulb in order to sell the truck for more money.

i am pretty sure it is burned out. the guy i got it from would be to lazy to take it out. besides, the previous owner is my neighbor. sold it to me extra cheap just to get it out of the driveway. any thoughts on the rough idle?

A rough idle can be from burn valves. But if it's more of a low idle than a rough one, I'd clean or replace the IAC valve (top front of the throttle body). It's supposed to raise the idle to compensate for the added load caused by the compressor. It doesn't sound like that's happening, so it could be gummed up.

Did I miss something? Is there any reason you have not tried to read the codes?

*look real close for some black tape over the cel!

ok, ni got the codes pulled today.... they are P0153,P0401,P0402,P1401,P1151,P1152. I looked them up on a list that was posted on here a while back and they are all EGR and O2 sensor related. is there a single underling cause for this? Iam working on cleaning the IAC, changing the PCV valve a looking for vacuum leaks, now. any help would be great. thanks

Intake gasket leak or a cracked PCV elbow at the rear of the intake.

Upper intake gasket and the elbow is at the top rear of the engine. It's very difficult to see, you might have to feel your way. See the elbow in the upper right corner of this picture? Well that's what you're looking for.
