Red is kind of a general term, its ELC, Extended Life coolant you are talking about. I got the delo ELC at my international dealer for 16.50 a gallon for concentrate.
Edit: the advantage of it is the delo is rated for 750,000 miles, and does not require the maintenance and monitoring like the other coolants.
I see you have an early 99, and I believe there is a possible issue with the sealant on the injector cups not being compatible with it. Payson PSD just had a thread about some of this recently, trying to find it for you.
If you switch, make sure you completely flush out your old green coolant from the engine..There are drain points on each side of the block to help get it all out.. You will not need the SCA additive anymore is a Plus....... If you keep your green coolant, be sure to check the SCA level with test strips.. otherwise you could ruin your engine..with cavitation...see: Diesel Technician Society
How do you test, were do you get strips? I know I recently put in NAPAKOOL, anticrosive additive in. Should I be ok?
You can get the test strips at just about any auto parts store.
SCA is to prevent tiny air bubbles (cavitation) from eating holes in the coolant passage walls. Anti-corosive additive is most likely not also an anti-cavitation additive.
I called Napa, they only have a bottle of 50 strips, he said this will last forever, I'd have to share the wealth on this one. I'm going to call someone else and see if I can get a smaller quantity.
The strips at Napa are a bit different in what they test the coolant for.. I would use the Fleetguard brand..You can get a 4 pack pretty cheap... I don't think the ones from napa check for Molybdate and nitrite..
Can someone help me to explain what this red coolant is all about, purpose, advantages, what it's called, where to get it, etc? Thanks!
I put together a pretty comprehensive thread here... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ml#post8935201 ...covering backflush procedure, what Extended Life Coolant is and how it works compared to the gold and the green, and a small list of example ELC's available for our rigs.
ELC is not recommended for E99 rigs. Gooch covers that in the info in the link I posted above.
All the info was compiled from Gooch's posts over the years. Gooch is a well respected expert when it comes to coolants and coolants in our diesels.
Hit up an International dealer for the ELC red stuff. It isn't hard to flush out the old stuff. There is a link somewhere on here that shows you the correct way to do it. It worked great on my truck.
You run the red stuff and you don't ever have to mess with the strips ever again

Exactly why I installed new cups in my E99 with the Ford recommended LocTite 620 retaining compound. LINK Original retaining compound in E99 is incompatible with the organic acid technology red elc.
Question for those that have done the switch. What did you do with all the coolant and flush water you have to run through the block? I hate to have all that running down the gutter.
Our area just had a Hazardous Wastemobile collection event last week.. Check with your local hazardous waste people for a up and coming collection event... They will take the antifreeze.. (drain as much as you can into containers before flushing with water.)
