My 86 6.9 is behaving badly.
3 weeks ago it decided to be hard to start. It would for a few seconds then sputter and die. It will start with minimal pushing on the plug button. Does the same thing hot as well(so not plugs?). Then after a day or 2 it ran great after taking it out for a good run. Now a week later same thing, starts dies then with some cranking it will start but rough for 30-45sec almost seems fuelish to me?
Sounds like you are suffering from air intrusion, but usually it has to sit a while before it affects things, so it's strange it is affecting it while hot. Take the fuel filter off and see if it is full to the top or down a ways before starting, that is one indicator of air getting into the system.
Be careful to crank the starter for a maximum of 20 seconds and then wait at least two minutes for it to cool down. Otherwise, you risk overheating the starter.
Also, how much fuel do you have in the tank being used? Sometimes they can act up like that when low (less than 1/3 - 1/2 tank or so), especially when parked pointing up hill.
You guys are all great!!! I looked at all my lines, and found that 3 of my 8 lines between my injectors are rotten(hidden under braided covers). We put a finger on them and watched diesel ooooooozzz out!!! I will replace today for $10. Let's see what happens! If not the fix needed to be done anyways, but would not happen without your guys advice... thanks
I bought a 86 F250 3 weeks ago. It was doing the same thing. Yesterday I found a leak at the fuel pump and I fixed it. That helped a little. I'm going to order the kit to replace the tees and hoses. Hopefully that will completely fix the hard starting problems. This is a great forum. I'm a old Ford motor head but this is my first diesel. I have a lot to learn. But it looks like I can find any help I need right here.

You'll also need to pull the return line caps and replace the o-rings at least, disturb them trying to replace the lines and you will still have hard starting due to air intrusion. Best thing is to go buy a 'fuel injector installation kit' which will give you new caps, o-rings, and line. It also comes with copper washers for the injectors, which you can sit aside for sometime in the future.
Many guys replace the o-rings with viton instead of the standard Buna that come in the kits, it can handle the higher heat a little better.
