loose mirror
If I tug on the mirror the top two bolts pull out of the door about half an inch. I tried actually tightening the bolts but that does not seem to do it. It actually looks more like two cylinders are pulling out of the door that the bolts attach in to.
I started to remove the door panel on the inside to try to see what was going on but after I removed a few screws and pulled the panel back it looks like there was a metal panel underneath so I was not able to get a look at what was going on internally.
The door has a dent in it near by the mirror that happened before I got the truck and I am guessing it is related to why the mirror pulls out.
Does anyone know what might be going on, how to fix it, or how to get to the inside of the door to look at the internal fasteners?
The mounting bolts that attach the mirror brackets to the doors fit into expandable metal sleeves (look like shouldered cylinders) that push into the sheetmetal from the outside.
Because of this, removing the door panel is not necessary.
The sleeves are worn out, will no no longer grasp the sheet metal when they expand. The original sleeves are obsolete, no one has any.
Similar (plastic) expandable sleeves are used with nails/screws to hang pictures on drywall, and for a gazillion other purposes.
Take one of the bolts to a hardware store, Home Dept/Lowes...match its I.D. to the correct sized plastic sleeve.
Push these plastic sleeves into the door, insert the bolts, tighten them up = problem solved.
