Troubleshooting compressor clutch question

With a test light, I have determined that power is getting all the way down to the compressor clutch plug. I tested resistance between the 2 pins on the compressor side for the coil and got about 4 ohms. A friend told me to apply 12V to the clutch plug and it should want to engage the clutch. I did but nothing but sparks happen. How can the clutch be tested? The last trip that the air worked on was at highway speeds, it would work for about 3 or 4 minutes great and then quit. Then 10 miles down the road when I turned the a/c back on, it would do the same thing. What do I check?

See FAQs above re: Clutch Gap first.

I saw that. So to check the gap, is it safe to assume insert a feeler gauge in the gap behind the clutch? How does the clutch come off to remove a shim?

It's perfectly safe to measure when the engine is off. Check several points to get an average.

To remove a shim, remove the center bolt and gently pry the clutch hub off. Any shims present will be between the contact points of the inner receiver of the hub and the snout of the pulley (the bolt passes through it). The shims look like washers.
