Unhappy E4OD skips 2nd gear?

I just bought a 97 F250 4x4 7.5L with an E4OD and the trans just skips second gear. All other gears shift smoothly and hold fine, 1st gear just wraps up to 4000+ rpm then shifts directly into 3rd. The trans fluid is also kind of merky. Any info on what could be causing this will be greatly appreciated. I really just want to know if theres anything fairly simple or cheap that could be causing this or if im just screwed with burnt out clutches and gonna have to rebuild/replace the trans.

Thanks in advance for any info

I suspect that the intermediate clutch has been trashed.

ok, if my intermediate clutch is bad I suppose my only option is to tear it down completely and rebuild it? Can you tell me who sells a good quality comprehensive rebuild kit and what specialty tools I will require? Is the Ford factory e4od service manual that you can find on ebay the best instructions for rebuilding this trans?

Or does anyone know of a source for a replacement trans under $1000 other than the Upullit yard?

Thanks for the help.

The only way to fix a clutch is to pull the trans and rebuild it.

There are a lot of places that sell rebuild kits. Just about any auto parts store will have one, and so will any trans parts source.

The Ford factory E4OD manual is a good one to use.

I found out my cluches aren't bad. The truck shifts into second fine when you manually shift it through the gears, but when you shift from 2nt to D it drops back to first then shifts to third. Everything mechanical seems fine, what electrical part would cause this? The shifter position sensor?

Thanks

How did you find that out? What color is the intermediate clutch friction material? Does it show any hot spots? If you think your intermediate clutch is fine because you have second gear with the shifter in 2, you're wrong.

When the shifter is in 2 the intermediate band is engaged. That will take the load that the intermediate clutch can't take anymore because it is burned up. You proved that by the 2-1-3 shift when you move the shifter from 2 to D.

Sorry, I am ignorant of the inner workings of an automatic. I was really just clinging to the hope I wouldn't have to have this expensive trans rebuilt. I think tearing in to this thing myself is going to be way over my head, do you know of an economical shop to have this done in northwest Florida?

Thanks for all the advice.

sry to bring up an old thread, but i had a transmission that skipped 3nd gear one time but it would not get to 2nd gear even when manual 2 was selected. 2nd gear clutches were totally burned off. band still good. would that mean that the shift valve was sticky-bad if neither 2 regular or manual 2 held. it held just a tiny bit, not much! oh i replaced the clutches and cleaned valve body and now the tranny works best when cold and starts shifting abnormally as it gets hotter. towing a trailer is the worst. and its not because of the light wires or trailer brakes cuz that trailer doesnt have any lights to plug in! lol

Did you also replace the seals in the clutch?
