Ive been looking for a used tranny for my 92 3.0. I found one but the ad says it's from a 96 which I know will not work in my 92, but heres the deal...There is a picture in his ad and the tranny has a modulator with the hose that goes up to the vacuum T on the motor. I thought that I read somewhere that the electric controlled trannys used in 1995 onward did not have a modulator and if this is the case, the tranny in the ad may be a 1994 or older.
Can anyone confirm this?
The Aerostar used the A4LD up through 1994, and 95-97 used the 4R44e or 4R55e, and the 4.0L '97 used the 5R55e.
The guy may have used a stock photo rather than taking a picture of his trans. You should find out which he has.
Why not rebuild you old trans? That almost always costs less in the long run. For starters, you know about your maintenance history, and you probably know whats wrong with yours. You can take your time, tear into it and replace the worn parts, even upgrade. You would be under $1000 in parts and you can make it better than new.
Khan raises some great points. I would also add, if you are going to be hauling any loads (be it on a trailer or in the back) I'd spring for a Transmission cooler. Very cheap insurance.
Yes it does come with one, but it's just adequate. A 2nd one makes for worry-free driving. While you're down there, it'd be easy to add.
Thanks for the replies.
I dont disagree with your advice on rebuilding the existing tranny but Im only looking to get another year (or less) out of the van so I dont want to spend much to get it going again. The tranny in the ad that I mentioned is $50.00 and apparently has only 108,000 kms on it.
For 50 bucks and a couple of hours of my time I will be back in business which is all Im looking for and yes, I do intend to put an extra cooler on it since I have one available. So just to confirm, only the A4LD had a vacuum modulator correct?
