Hey guys still restoring the truck, just haven't been on in a while. Got a question with the lettering on the truck I am restoring. Its a 81 F250 Custom and the original hood had Ford wrote on it with letters. Well the hood was pretty bent up, so we went to the junk yard and got a hood, but it was a newer model and it doesn't have the lettering. We really wanted to keep it looking like the 81 model so we were wondering whats the best way to attach the lettering? Once we drill the holes, what will hold the letters into place? Just figured maybe one of you guys have had to do the same thing and might know a couple tricks!
There's little clips that go in the holes. Even new hoods typically won't have the holes for the letters, since they were only used on 80-81 models. The hood ornament is even rarer, so if you have one of those, there's a good chance that the hole won't exist, even if you were to find a good used 80-81 hood.....
are they held in place with barrel clips (pins) or are they glue on?
Barrel clips with pins on the back of the letters. Even the side/tailgate badges used these. I believe the 80-81 was the last years that didn't have stick on badging.
Ok either way it's fairly easy. you just have to measure where the lettersgo, hopefully you still have the old hood for reference. Just need to find the barrel clips that fit the pins and drill the holes to the size of the clips and then push the clips in then the emblems. Unless the pins are broke off you might have to glue them on or find others.
