302 With Problems Smoking.
Its bored .60 over, large cam, headers, 4 barrel 650cfm Edlebrock, performer rpm mid rise intake and a high flow oil pump.
I have been having problems here recently with smoke out of the drivers side pipe, but when the engine gets warm, it moves to both pipes.
I have done a compression test and each cylinder is reading at about 135psi.
I am starting to have what I think is a little bit of valve noise.
Oil is reading right where it should be, but its burning it from somewhere.
Any ideas or suggestions of things to try?
I am almost at my wits end.
Thanks in advance.
The block was bored .40 over,,,but had been run,(some ridge),,,used a ball hone to cross-hatch the cylinders,,cleaned everything,,new rings, have a SBF rebuild book,,,very helpful,,,I have '63 289 heads,,had a valve job done on them,,he said he did guides on the intakes,,new seals,,springs to accomadate the Comp 268H cam,,put all together,,lit right off on first try(me and my sons first rebuild),,,had a bit of trouble adjusting the valves,,,these heads are the adjustable rocker type,,got them all fairly quiet,,,(Not sure I like the Comp Cam and Lifters,,,,NOISEY)
Did the Cam breakin procedure,,cam and lifters seem fine,,,but Noisey,,,started driving the car( '68 Torino, 4-Gear),,,started seeing smoke,,when foot off pedal, coming down hills,, then more smoke when putting my foot into it,,,,tried everything,,,pulled intake thinking it sucked a gasket,,,,NOPE,,,did new valve seals,,,NOPE,,,had 155 compression on all 8 cylinders,,but # 1 and # 6 plug was black,,all others where nice tan/white,,,thinking maybe I broke a oil ring on each piston,,,engine is Now out of the car and on a engine stand,,,,NO Broken rings,,,,WTF ??
Any Ideas?
I have recently read where on a SBF,,,that boring .60 over is not recommended,,,making cylinder walls to thin ??
PS,,,On a side note,,the 289 ran Great,,,,Never Blew up for the short time I ran it,,,I built the car to have fun with,,,She did some Great Burn Runs,,,And Just something about the sound of a cammed, 4-barrel carbed, rather Healthy, SBF,,,and Letting it eat all it can,,,makes your hair stand-up,,,LOVE IT !! Ford 9", 3:50 Trac-Loc, Comp Traction Bars, New springs and shackles, CenterForce clutch/pressure plate,,, ETC..I just dont want it to Smoke!
the smoke is from your rings not seating yet. this is could be from not running a thick enough oil or the proper type. you should do oil changes at 500miles, 1000miles 2000miles and then 3000miles moving to the normal oil change interval. DO NOT run synthetics during this break in procedure, use Rotella or Delo 20w30 or 20w50. the thicker oil will help seat the rings properly. you also shouldnt hold a steady rpm for to long while driving, you want to move up and down the rpm range to also help seat the heads.
as for the .60 overbore all that will do is increase the chance of overheating due to thin cylinder walls.
Also my cross-hatch was pretty shined up already,,,,maybe it was not roughed up enough??
I thought we had about a 45 degree cross-hatch,,by looking at it,,,Help?
PS,,, Roughly 800 miles on the engine.
