has anyone tried buying a short block from an online company with good success. i'm still weighting my options on getting this short block that will be delivered to my door for $1500 this includes everything but the oilpan, intake, heads, timing cover & pulleys. i'm just wondering about this. so does this seem like a good deal oh and the cam is an upgrade not the stocker.
351W
short block-$899
cam upgrade w/lifters -$299
flex plate & balancer -$80
oil pump, timing set are already included
yeah i could not find one that cheap but i only looked for 5 min. the question is are you into performance because if you are like me you end up changing so many things one at a time that you could have just got a crate engine and skipped alot of time and extra money.
well i did talk to the people & they told me that it was assembled by one person from start to finish. it's a short block and all the performance stuff is already there(cam) i have the heads getting clean up already. i have looked at other sites and just the short block is way more expensive with less stuff but thanks for all the feedback guys i was just wanting to see if anyone else went this route instead of buying one and having it rebuilt...
it's going in my 84 f150 long bed currently it has a 302, c4, 3:08... no towing maybe a little hauling of dirt and some lumber. it'll be a 351w gt40 heads, 1406 eddy carb & preformer intake shorty headers, b&m shift kit gears will be swapped out later for 3:55
if its an 84 you more than likly have a C6. the C4 wasnt an option in the 80s.
a gear swap to 3.55's would be easy. find a complete rear 8.8 diff from 87+ and just get the front TTB D44 center section from same 87+ years and be set
The cam is the brain of the engine, it brings everything together. If it isn't matched to your combo AND to your intended uses, there will be nothing performance about it. I mean matched to the bolt-on parts, not just Maf or SD or carb.
Do you already have the shorties? They're not much of an upgrade over stock manifolds if at all. Long tubes make the best power, and that power is really made in the collector so that's the most important part, which shorties don't really have.
And those GT40 heads are STOCK 5.0 heads, they will choke a well built 351w.
well the cam is slightly bigger than an RV cam, so i'm not going to extreme with this just a kick *** daily driver. as far as the headers go the shorties were free i'm still thinking about the long tube later down the road. the heads that i really want cost $1800. i think that the combo that i'm looking at will give me close to 300-325HP at the flywheel & that's plenty for now...
OK, I understand a lot of people are happy with RV cams on their stockish build, was just saying a custom grind for your application will really optimize it for only $75-100 more.
If your planning on upgrading later on, I would seriously look into it.
What heads you looking at? For $1500 you can get Trick Flow 190 FAC heads, and it's very hard to beat those heads anywhere in that price range with the better valve placement and intake port cross section. It takes an AFR 205 to get close to them.
When you upgrade, a 190FAC head, Vic Jr. or Sup Vic intake, and proper carb to go on top will easily break 400 ponies. And as long as you get a Cam ground for your specific combo, No, you won't lose any down low...You'll gain power Everywhere.
Though with the Twisted wedge heads you need pistons with the offset valve reliefs, so that would be something to get in the shortblock now.... Just some ideas man.
Btw, if you go LTs sometime, You can get some free HP by running a pan-evac. Replaces your PCV system and actually removes all that excess pressure in your crankcase that your crank has to fight through. People usually gain anywhere between 20-50HP by evacuating the crankcase.
