OEM Satellite Receiver Compatability

I have a 2009 F250 with the sync system in it. I would like to install an OEM satellite receiver but do not want to pay dealer prices for a new reciever. That leaves Ebay and other options for used parts. However, I have heard that I must have a receiver from a vehicle with sync in order for this to work. Is that true? Can I use a receiver from any Ford/Mercury vehicle or are only certain models compatible? Any info on which receivers will and will not function is greatly appreciated.

in 2005 the truck line used a slightly different networking protocol (CAN). I'd suspect that would make a difference. I'd also suspect, you'd have to use a sync interfaced receiver for the radio to talk to it. Just my guesses though.
