I have a 97 with a 5.4l engine. My tranny will not come out of Overdrive at all. The button on the shift lever does not work, I even replaced it with a new one. I checked the elec. connector on the tranny, and it seems fine. Any one have any ideas ???
I had the same prob on my SD. The wire in the gear shift lever broke. You can check this with a continuity chker by pulling the column plastic off and disconnecting the harness, its right above the column near the speedo. Then pop off the button cap and finger out the button. and beep away. You will notice that at least one wire is open i.e. no connetion. The fix for this is to either make a new harness like I did or buy a new gear shift lever from ford for $50. It takes about 10minutes to make the new harness. I used telephone wire and just soldered it inbetween the connectors. Becareful not to short the connections to the gear lever when reinstalling! If you have any more detailed questions about the proceedure let me know and I'd be happy to help.
Thanks !!! That was it. The wire was fried all the way down to the next connector. I made a new one, but what a pain to snake it through the shift lever. I had to pull the lever off. Anyway, thanks again.........................
