In the recent thread about reprogramming 98 Expy keys, it was noted that a procedure exists for the 97&98's, but doesn't mention the 99. Does anyone know how to program an extra key for the 99's if I already have two that function properly?
I found a manual and figured it out-anyone that pays the dealer $60 for this should be ashamed. All vehicles come "enabled" to learn up to 8 new keys. Assuming you have two keys that work, take one of them, turn from stop to run and leave for 1 second, then remove. Do the same with the second one within 5 seconds of turning the first one off. After removing the second one, you have 10 seconds to install the newly cut key into the ignition. Turn from stop to run, leave for one second, then turn off. The new key will now start the car. FYI-I got a new key from the dealer for $25 and they wanted $60 for programming and threatened me that if I screwed it up, it would blow out all of my electronics......what a scam!
Thus to read is good. Please do not be afaid to read. That is why they write the book. Please take this as a good thing. Most people forget they can read. As far as Ford goes the only get the people that can not read and have FXXX it up. That is where it comes from. (that and they want the $$$)haha. I didn't know you could get 8 keys set, I thought it was only 3. As far as your ? about the key fabob I wish I could help you.
Now that you know how to program the key, here is the procedure for the fob.
1 -- Turn the key from off to ACC 8 times in under 10 seconds.
2 -- If you do it right, the doors will lock/unlock, to let you know you are in programming mode.
3 -- Hit a key on the fob -- the locks will move again.
4 -- Do this with each fob, even the ones already programmed, because this will set a new code for the fobs, making your old ones useless. The locks will move with each key you press.
5 -- Turn the key to off. The locks move again (I think -- I'm remembering this off the top of my head), and you're out of programming mode.
Thanks for the programming tip, the trouble is, thats the procedure I followed After leaving the programming mode, the only ones that worked were the Ford clickers. This same phenomena is true when trying to teach the GM to read the Ford clickers.
What if you have only 1 key. I have a 99 and only received one key when I bought the car used. I suppose this method does not work with only one key, correct?

Yeah, I feel your pain Jared. I am in the exact same situation.
PLEASE, someone help... I just ordered a Repair CD off eBay today and I bought this 99 from a dealer two weeks ago. Hook the newbies up!!!
The '99+ models require two keys, and I don't believe there's a way around it. I managed to reduce the price my dealer charged by buying two blank PATS keys on eBay, then taking them to the dealer. They still charged me about $80 to program them, then complained mightily that programming those eBay blanks were "so hard" and "they nearly couldn't program them" and "don't do that again -- buy a REAL Ford blank" etc etc. But now that I have two (actually three) I can program new ones at will. The main thing is getting a key-cutter you trust -- even on eBay those PATS keys are too expensive for some minimum-wage hardware store flunkie to practice on.
Actually, you can program a '99 key when you only have one programmed key available. The trouble is, you need a NGS or some other diagnostic tester that alllows you to enter the appropriate menu - "Ignition Key Code Program". If you have access to this, just place your unprogrammed key in the ignition and into the "run" postion. Enter the appropriate programming mode via the NGS (or other devide -Snap-On makes one) and then turn the key off. The vehicle should now start. If you've got any gear-head buddies, see if they have a Next Generation STAR tester.
If not with one key its off to the stealership you go. I found out about what hokie described only after I went to the stealership for the new key to get progged.
