I have a 65 Ford 3 speed standard transmission with a overdrive.
The overdrive activation is done by pulling a lever on the lower left side of the dash (to the left of the steering column). The overdrive is not working. So I tested all the components such as the govenor switch connected to the gas pedal. They all seem to work. So I removed the solenoid attached to the overdrive unit on the overdrive part of the tranny. The shop manual says that you can test the solenoid electrically. I did and it did not respond (plunger did not move in or out). Problem is now do I replace the unit (solenoid)? I have searched for one with no luck, do I get it rebuilt if it can be, is it common to other similar overdrive trannys? Any suggestions??

I had the same problem in my 59. You can get the parts from "Border Parts" in San Diego they specialize in drive train stuff of all kinds. I think I paid around $80. I must say I never was real happy with that transmission though. After replacing the cluster gear 3 times I got a 3spd top loader and never had another problem. Border Parts phone #(619)461-0075.
