My bud has a 96 chevy 2500 thats acting kinda funny. At about 2000 rpms it kinda start bogging down and starts putting out a good amount of black smoke from the tail pipe and has a wierd rattling noise. He gives it more throttle and pushes through to about 2500 then it clears up. Noise goes away and smoke back to normal. He never really drives it above probably 2800 rpms. I told him to put it in neutral and romp on it. At about 3500 ( I think it red lines a 5?) it really start putting out some smoke and I'd say at 4000 he's practically rollin coal.
What do you guys think. I know this is not a chevy thread. The mechanic he took it to though it was the vacuum pump. THey replaced that and same probs.
He thinks it might be the EGR valve. We both don't know what the EGR valve does though
Step 1: Post Chevy for sale on Craigslist
Step 2: Take the first offer to buy because it may be the only one
Step 3: Use the $$ made as a down payment on a 7.3L FORD
and voila, problem solved.
Just kidding. But no, really, have him get a Ford.
I put that because I don't have a real answer. Good luck though.
EGR will do some strange things if they are carboned up.
Now, with the 96, it should be throttle body still and railed fuel into the Throttle body, I think.
Black smoke and no power.
Map sensor could be bad, or he has a major air restriction, but a gas engine generally wont run and blow black smoke.
They will just bog down and try to die when you hit the gas.
im not sure if it has a map sensor or not but that could do it as well as it controlles the fuel air. i know that water in the map will cause it to do that.
Are we talking about the 6.5 diesel? I had one in my suburban, and everytime the injector pump was going out on me it was doing what your explaining. Not too sure if its your injector pump or not, but mine did that. I had to put about 4 pumps in mine within 10 years of owning the thing. Loved the truck, except when you hit the throttle it only got louder never got faster! lol
If the egr is vacuum actuated pull the vac line and test run the motor
If its electric unplug it and test run it. If its vacuum actuate you can remove the tube and attach a vacuum pump and guage and draw a vacuum if the engine starts to stall then the egr is moving. But still could be sticking. Denote the guage pressure when the problem exist.
run the engine until it reaches the surge zone and unplug the map and see if it clears up. Repost afterwards with results.
my bad guys, yeah it's a diesel. prob wont see him till sunday and if i do have time to look at it it will only be about 20 min at the church so a lot of tools, etc might be much.
krsix125- it sounds like you know what's going on. the truck seems like it has no power at any time. maybe it's time for a powerstroke
fyi, the EGR valve sits right on top of the engine. like above where our fuel filter sits. I still need to know what an EGR valve does and do our trucks have them. THanks!
