My son started his 94 Bronco 5.0 and there was a really load squeal under the hood. When I popped the hood I quickly spotted the belt slipping on the air compressor pulley - the belt was begining to smoke. Could this result from an old belt not being tight enough or from something being wrong with the pulley?
Update - I took off the belt and I can not turn the pulley al all. Should I be able to turn the puley by hand?
Sounds like the bearing in the pulley locked up. You should be able to spin it easily by hand.
Try to turn the clutch plate in front of the pulley with a 5/16" or 8mm wrench. It should turn freely with slight resistance. If it is tight, the compressor has failed internally.
If it is free you can replace the clutch assembly, which includes a new pulley and bearing. The clutch kit is about $100.
You could also replace just the bearing if you can source a replacement. Parts stores don't carry them, but any bearing distributor can supply one if you get the number off of the old bearing.

Thanks for the info. I had already taken off the clutch plate by the time you responded. The bearings look like a bunch of loose ball bearings and gathered up at the bottom. Hopefuly I can get the clutch off.
