Is there an oversized idler pulley for a '96 460? The clutch in my AC compressor is constantly engaged so I replaced the belt with a smaller one to bypass the compressor completely ($20 belt vs. $??? AC compressor repair or replacement) but there are two problems,
1: the belt is a little to big for the pulley to fully tighten the belt.
2: the next smallest belt I have found so far is too small to fit.
I was thinking that if there is a larger pulley I could replace mine with the larger one to properly tighten the belt. The screech from the belt is getting a bit annoying.
Just a thought, have you tried unhooking the power lines to the compressor so it doesn't engage? Don't know if your compressors shot, or if it has some electrical problem, just tossing this out there.
Belt needed to be replaced anyway. Plus I may get the ac compressor fixed at a later date. Not having the belt drive it will prevent further damage to compressor.
PUT the wrench down and back away from the Idler pulley! Look closer at a/c comp. function. clutch pulley freewheels until power energizes electro=magnetic coil forceing clutch engagement. 2 reasons that could disallow returning to freewheel function. Coil remains energized? So pull its connection. If no change, the clutch connot & is not engaged. So, what could keep a pulley to no longer freewheel when mounted securely to a rotating drive shaft ??? Bad BEARING!!! Out w/ the bad, use # stampped on side hub to ID part locate supplier (it is a very common multi purpose variety) Id be shocked if it over $10-$15 unless you buy it at a ford dealer.
Seeing as winter is coming soon and I do not need AC I am not going to worry about fixing the AC compressor. When I do decide to get it fixed it will be going to an expert (I have never worked on AC compressors.)
The belt needed to be replaced anyway and the idler pulley still needs to be replaced as it has a bit of a wobble and the bolt is properly torqued.
