I got a 95 F150 with the 4.9 with about 150,000miles. I change my oil every 3000k miles. When i change my oil (using 20w50w castrol with motorcraft filter) i get a dieseling clatter and after i get say 1000miles on the oil the clatter will stop. I was just wondering what makes it do this? The oil pressure gauge is on the A in Normal. I fill the filter with oil also when i change it.
Where does the clatter seem to be coming from? Top, bottom? It's probably the lifters tapping. The oil may be too thick being 20w 50. After 1000 mi or so it starts to thin out. Why are you using such a heavy oil?
Mine does that too, its got 69000 miles on the original engine. it almost sounds like piston slap but new oil sure makes it make noise for a few minutes until the oil warms up. Kinda embarrassing for it to knock. But its been doing it for over 15000 miles. I run 10w-40.
When i first got the truck i tried different types of oil weights and the 20w 50 was the quietest. The clatter is coming from the top to side. Usually around the 1000 mile period it will do it sometimes but when it warms up it totally stops. You can give it some gas at about 1000rpms and it will stop but once the truck goes back to idle speed 750rpms it goes back to clattering again. Can you run an additive to help it?
My '89 does the same thing it has 156000 miles on it I run 10w30 and a motorcraft filter....Anyways I am not really gental with my engine ( dont over rev it) but I have a 4 speed so I have to rev it up a little ....I would just drive the truck another 150000 miles and pay attention to the oil pressure gauge Jon
Put down the 20w50, and step away from the truck! Seriously, that is WAY too thick of an oil to be expecting it to last. Change it out, 10w30, or even 5w30, and a Motorcraft filter. Hopefully permanent engine damage has not occured. Manufacturers recomend an oil weight for a specific reason, and that is flow rate at cold temperatures. Running too thick of an oil starves the bearings, lifters, and can even twist the oil pump drive shaft, or strip the gear off of the distributor and cam.
I agree with Jared.
20W-50 is way too thick for your truck.
What is the weather like there?
10w-30 should do fine...
I use 5w-30 the weather here is mild... Down to 20 or so at night and 40 at most during the day..
10w-30 in the summer after May or June........
If it is not 120 during the day and 90 at night you do not need the 20w50 oil......
I agree... put down the 20w50.
That oil is WAY to strong for a engine.
:-staun
I use 10w40 all year long
We usually don't get a whole lot of freezing. We get some weather in the 90s and low 100 in the spring tho.
Its been a pretty cold winter, but I use a block heater all winter anyways. It keeps the truck around 100 degrees so when I fire her up in the morning i have heat.
I know it's not that good on oil to have a block heater on all the time in the winter, but its one that goes in the freeze plug of the block. Plus I change the oil more often in the winter due to this.
But anyways, I got off topic there...
Just PLEASE dont ever put 20w50 in your motor again.
i use 10W30 in my l6. its just the lifters. theres a part you can buy from FOMOCO that attaches to the oil filter. i dont know the part number off by heart but i will try to find it
i use 10w30 and that thing has never had oil problems. I think thats too much oil for that poor truck, its probly clattering becouse it cant get the oil up to the valves properly becouse its too thick.
My dad was telling me that his dad's old 300-6 they also used 20w50 which it has 286,000 miles on it now. Doesn't the oil thicking up after it you get miles on it?? But the next time im going to try 10w 30 or 10w40 and see if i get the clattering i know i will probably get some but these engines have never ran right. Thanks for all the help, Mike
Oil THINS as it ages & warms up, but I've run 20W/50 for the past 250Kmi in mine and it runs like a top. A little clatter now & then, but no problems. I change EVERY 2Kmi.
Myself I run 10w/30 in the winter,10w/40 in the summer
I've got 250,000 on it and not easy miles I might add.........
With nary a problem..........But I change oil EVERY 3,000
After an oil change my lifters peck for about 5-10 seconds.....
10w30 for me year round, and i get the dieseling noise after i change it...i figured it was normal. runs like bear so i dont care, doesnt seem to hurt it. my dads doesnt do it i think (95 f-150 300/auto)...
