I have a 1989 e150 that makes weird noise. When the engine is warm and i start it. It makes a noise that sounds like a backfire in the exhaust manifold. Has anyone had this problem before or know what it is. thanks for the help.
It may be a backfire. This would only happen if there are fuel vapors in the manifold . Ignition could be caused by hot carbon or poor valve timing. hmmmmm it's an '89. I'm guessing close to 200k miles. Timing chain maybe? How's it running otherwise?
It has a 302 and the noise occurs about 3 or 4 seconds after i start the engine. it usually occurs when the engine is at operating temperature. It has about 170k on it and other then this it runs fine. Also another clue might be that the exhaust manifold has a crack in it. the noise sound like a series of muffled pops coming from the exhaust manifold. i thought it might have something to do with the air injection system but i'm not sure.
I"m thinking that with a crack in the manifold you may just be hearing exhaust pop until the temperature makes the metal move again. I think the air pump feeds the air into the exhaust further back in the system if I remember right. Hey ......if it's runnin' good, what the heck! Just keep an eye out for another manifold for a van. Best of luck..........
