I just rebuilt a '94 trans to go into a 96 truck. Had the wrong selinoid pack in it (pre-95) and switched it to the correct one (post-95). Got it all buttoned up and filled with fresh fluids. Got the new motor started and timed and checked everything for leaks. Great so far. Motor runs fine.
i looked at the OD on the shift lever. It was flashing on and off and read in the owners manuel that it was not good. Any reason why this is happening? Should i still pull the codes from the computer even though the CEL isn't on?
Yes check the codes. I had a fresh rebuild and reman torque converter from a professional builder. I had bad vibration at 1500-2000 rpm and flashing OD light. I had a code 628: excessive slippage in torque converter. Another shop that builds torque converters tested my new one and it had 0.040 run-out. They reject theirs at 0.002 . Two converters later and the light is out. There could be many other reasons for the OD light flashing and codes will point you in right direction. My case; I had assumed that because I had a new converter it couldn't be that causing the problem.

I really hope that isn't the problem!! but i will check the codes and post later tonight on what I find.
Note:
The OD light is operated by the PCM and not the transmission.
The PCM will flash the light if it thinks something is wrong with the wiring, solenoid pack, transmission slipping or sometimes the TR sensor (MLPS).
well heres the codes that i got from the KOEO test. I couldn't seem to get the koer test to start with my Innova 3145 so I may have to do it the old fashion way.
KOEO: 654- not in "park" during the koeo test. I'm pretty sure that it was in park during the test, but who knows. Something fishy here? 452 CM- VSS signal fault Is this the black thing on the side of the trans that hooks to the shift lever? 668 CM-transmission range sensor above maximum voltage. I have no clue about this one

I ordered the selinoid pack as a reman component. Cost me 305 dollars. Hope its no this.

Bad MLPS (TR sensor) black thing on the side of the trans that hooks to the shift lever.

No it is behind the Speedometer. Bad information from PSOM.

I'm going to try a different one from another 94 trans and see if that changes anything. I know when i tried to remove it from the trans i accidently made it swing all the way around the post so that may have messed something up.
Had this same problem with my 95 with a e40d trans... light would flash while driving then slam gears... I have a great mechanic that assured me it wasn't mechanical. Had the VSS code like you, and its not in the dash, its on top of the rear axle... VSS= vehicle speed sensor. Mine was cracked, they are about thirty bucks. also replace the wiring from said sensor to the computer, then wiring from cluster to computer, then from computer to cruise control module under the hood... not sure why that needed replacing but what the hell... mechanic told me if it happened again to unplug the cruise control wiring harness from under the hood, it happened again, then I unplugged it, and its cool now for about a month. Something about the servo in the Cruise control that if it goes bad it can feed bad info to the computer making this happen. The hard shift if the computer trying to protect the trans...
I'm just saying, check the wiring first, old brittle wires were my issue. Only cost me 50.00 to have the mechanic rewire everything, but he's a buddy, so don't expect the same thing from a shop I suppose. (Mechanic used to be the tech support guy for ford that dealership mechanics would call when they couldn't figure something out)
