I just purchased my first 1962 f100 which has the factory 6 cylinder 3 speed on the column. I have a 1967 c4 trans from mustang....will the c4 trans bolt to the 6 cylinder engine? or will i need some type of adapter? I know there is a cross member kit to use but not sure of the bell housing?
If the engine in your truck is the original 6 cylinder the answer to your question is no, the C4 wont bolt up.
While the C4 does have a removable bell housing, I am pretty certain Ford never offered the C4 behind the 223" 6 cylinder, or any of it's big brothers.
There are numerous companies that offer adapter kits and adapter bell housings. Maybe one offers something for the 223.
Oh, ok..well thanks for the info. That helps my decision to go ahead and bolt in a 302 with the c4..I was hoping to use the c4 as I rebuild the 302. So I guess I will rebuild the engine and put them both in at the same time...thanks for your reply.
The 302 and c4 was taken out of 67 mustang but the engine code says it is a 1966 302 from Fairland. The engine did run right before it was pulled but had been sitting for awhile with little use. So I plan to rebuild the 302 for my 62' f100. I'm not going to drag race the truck and I'm not going to drive it across the country; I'm looking to have a fun truck with quick throttle response, great deep sound, nice little lope to the idle, with nice torque. Any opinions on how i should go about putting a nice package together for the engine? Stroker kit? roller cam or tappet? aluminum heads? could this be achieved with a $2500~$3000 engine budget?
Pretty sure the 302 was first available in 1968...prior to that it would have been the 289...
As far as spending $3 grand, I think that's hugely unnecessary for driving around...a mild cam, good intake and 4bbl carb with
a nice set of headers will be good. So much can be done with a simple stock 302 that won't break the bank and give you
a good ride...a good throaty lope is all cam and exhaust...
I was going to say the same thing cropduster. If its out of a 66 fairlane than its a 289. My 67 fairlane was a 289 car. And my dad actually put a 351 windsor in a truck that had a 300 six cylinder, and if I'm not mistaken the 223 and 250 six cylinders also have the same bell housing, so the c-4 would work behind the 6 cylinder. A simple rebuild of a 289 can be done fo your engine budget. I built a peppy 289 for a mustang for my cousin for just over $2000
289s and 302s are ridiculously similar. I've ran both in the same vehicle, and honestly the 289 seemed more torquey and the 302 had more top end power. Definitely run headers if you can swing them but any of the exhaust manifolds for a small block would work. That being said. Those manifolds could be from anywhere. Check the engine code under the sta rter on the block. It will tell youwhat the engine is and the year it was built
Ragland, I'm gonna suggest a 90s 5.0 and AOD. It will help a lot with the daily mpg. Or maybe a newer 4.6. You can probably find a setup running for 5-800.00. The money that you can save at the pumps will add up in a years time.
