I posted what I thought might be the brake controller plug, but apparently its not. I went to Uhaul to see about buying the controller and they thing the factory one is gone. The four wires where it should be were cut and taped together. The guy said they were the right color but were all dead, no power coming through any of them according to his little test light. They want $100 to hardwire one in.
He checked the fuses, but are there any relays that could be bad? What should I do/check to get this thing working?
I pick up my travel trailer next Tuesday and really need to get this working before then. My mechanic can't get me in before Thursday, so if I can't get this done I'm stuck paying Uhaul $100 instead of just using what should be the factory harness.
I couldn't see the plug in your picture, but the four same colored wires as the brake controller wires that has no power to either of them are"not" the brake controller wires, trust me I know for sure. The wires that have no power were put there from Ford as extra wires for whatever. The brake controller plug is a square grey plug that is on the inside of the opening to the right of your picture.

IMHO anybody who has spent any time under the dash of these trucks professionally (like the U-Haul guy), should know what those wires are for. I think you would be paying $100 for him to learn. I would go elsewhere. The people on this site will put you where you need to be and it won't cost you a cent.
The grey plug is the factory harness. The brown plug that is plugged into the grey plug is the Ford specific pigtail coming from a Prodigy brake controller, plugging into the factory harness.
This picture was taken from the drivers side looking to the center of the dash, just under the climate controls. The knee panel under the steering wheel was removed to get this view.
Yea, I don't see his plug either in his picture. A touch different. Must be a 99? Mine is were steward's finger is pointing. Something different in his truck's hole like a black square plug box or something.

Eeek.. is that rust ? That truck go for a swim?
No, no swimming. Humidity and years, I guess. Its a 1999.5.
There's no plug back in that hole. The only wires either go to the stereo, the 4wd switch, or that large black box. I can't see any plugs that aren't used other than that round thing.
The plug should be there in thru that brace dash hole, to the right after removing the dash cover under steering wheel ..It is really tuck in there.. Ford did not make it easy to get at.... !!

If its in there its on the passenger side. I've done everything but take the stereo out and try to get to if from the top.
"It appears it was clipped in on the bottom"-mine was clipped down when I had a problem with my trailer wiring. I have a early 99 and it was setup like stewart posted.
Ok, I think the previous owner must have cut the plug out for some reason. I unclipped the big black doo-dad and found some loose wires that come out of the same harness.
The red one gets power when I push the brake pedal, so there's a postive sign. The others don't have power at all, though. The blue and white both seem dead, regardless of key position. Should the blue one be the wire the brake controller plugs into that leads to the pin at the rear bumper? I know white should be ground, just can't figure out why there's no 12v source there unless I just couldn't fish it out. Easy to wire that up, though.
There's also a fat red one that's also dead.
Now that I've at least got a lead to the brake system, how tough is wiring in a brake controller to the system? I hate to pay $100 to have it done but my regular mech can't get me in until 2 days after I need it. Unfortunately due to work demands I'll either have to work on it at night or the morning before I pick up the trailer.
Here's some photos of the 7 pin connection at the back, it appears to be the factory one.
This Help? Tough to debug someone else wire.. Wish i could drive up and lend a hand.
Brake switch wire seems good.
Big blue goes to the back. White goes to white for grounding.
Big red gets 12v to shift to the back by brake box via Blue (big red controlled by relay)
and i think there is one more. 12v constant. not sure of the color.(orange?) SO the brake box displays all the time.
Relay and fuses are up in engine bay next to the master cylinder.
Not to sure. Been a while since i have worked on it. (see wire6.pdf)

Yeah, between this post, a circuit tester, and another post in the 7.3 section I got it figured out. I still wonder why the previous owner apparently cut the plug off in the cab. Too cheap to buy the pigtail? Didn't know any better? Who knows. At least its working now.
