Question about pistons
I have a 400 that I had rebuilt. I am trying to remove the old pistons from the connecting rods but I don't know how to do it. I tried using a socket and a hammer but the pins would not budge in the connecting rods. Any advise? Thanks.

These pins are a very tight press fit. Machine shops have a rod heater to install the pins. They are heated on the small end untill they are very hot, this expands the hole enough for the pin to literally drop in place.

If your not worried about cracking the old pistons I would just find a buddy that had a press and press them out. You can use one of those small propane bottle torches from Walmart to heat the end of the rod enough to slide new piston pins in. Gotta be quick, the rod will draw down on that cold pin fast. Also gotta make sure the pin aint sticking out one side to far. Mark rod in location to piston so you don't put the pistons on backwards.

You will need a press to get them off. If you have been hitting them with a hammer you should get them checked for straightness. You might as well get the rods resized with new bolts if you are removing the pistons from the rods.
