Leafs are rattling
Can someone tell me what a leaf spring shim does? I notice when the truck is loaded that I get a loud slap/rattle from the springs (front and rear) I know the truck needs new shocks, I'm looking at Bilsteins, but is there anything else I should consider maybe the problem, and should address while I'm under there doing shocks.

The only shim I know of is used to change pinion angle which wouldn't help you. On my F150, there are plastic isolators at the end of each leaf, it sounds like yours might be missing or your springs are just getting weak & need to be re-arched.
