log splitter help

so i got this log splitter for free today. its a custom made one. the guy said it has a 50 ton cylinder on it. i dont know, but it does look significantly bigger then my neighbors 30 ton one. the problem is the old motor blew up and it needs a new one. i can get a motor easily. the problem is someone told me it needs a gear reduction on it i dont know if thats true or not. can someone shed some light on the situation?

I have heard of clutches, but, not a gear reduction. If anything you want the pump spinning faster for higher and quicker pressure. If it does have a gear reduction box, I doubt it is bad so you can reuse it.

Ditto.
I've never seen gear reduction on a factory unit, or a clutch for that matter. But I guess it might be possible with a home built job that the pump capacity is too high so you need a lower rpm input to accommodate it.
But, if you got the unit intact and it didn't have a gear reduction on it already, I don't see the point of putting one on.
You do need a quality shock absorbing spider coupler between the engine PTO and the pump input shaft, however.

it it had a gear reduction unit on the engine, the splitter most likely used a dump or garbage truck hydraulic pump
we compensated for the lack of a gear reduction unit on the splitter we built years ago by using a set of drive gears and chain from a motorcycle ..

the one from the bottom of the tank to the pump with the hose clamps on it is the low pressure suction side. all other hoses are high pressure hoses, even the one from the top of the valve body to the top of the tank.
the only reason you can get away with clamps on that one is because it is an open return so will not have the high pressure that the valved lines will.
