The 10.25 and 10.5 deals with the carrier in the axles.
the housings are the same, the ring gear and carriers are different.

they take the same lockers too.. my buddy's Detroit for his 10.50 will fit our 10.25's....

Personally, I'd paint it black too. The fins will help more than the stock cover, even if it was painted black, but just wanted to throw that info out there.
you could radiator black paint, it is supposed to allow heat to disipate better than normal black paint
