I was wanting to know if anybody knows what shifters would fit a 73-79 ford truck with a 4 speed manual trans on the floor? I am getting ready to put the trans an clutch an everything back in it an I am wanting to replace the shifter I would like to find a short shift for it if I can. Can anybody help me?

Is there any place that might carry a universal short shift for a 4 speed manual trans? An sawsall an a set of taps? the shifter has a lot of play in it that is why I am looking to replace it an was wanting to go with a short shift if I can.
I have never seen any short shifters except homemade. They were cut off and then rethreaded on the end for a shift ****. To fix the slop in the shifter it needs to be rebuilt to original specs. These transmissions were not designed for speed shifting as the gears have too much weight for a car type synchronizer. They have heavy duty truck style synchronizers. There are no aftermarket shifters.
It may not be a short shifter, but i have a hurst shifter on the floor and i love it . its the best thing i ever did, the make them in 3 and 4 speed applications, and even though its not a short throw, i can still slam it into gear pretty quickly, you can find them all day long at summit racing
New, they had about 1/2" to 3/4" slop in both directions. To rebuild them, they have a ball on the end that wears flat on the sides. You have to weld the ball and file it, to make it round again and back in spec.
These are heavy duty truck transmission and are not designed to be precision shifters. Its just a different animal from a car trans. If it doesn't have more that an inch slop in it, there is not much to be gained by rebuilding the shifter.
Maybe you should look into swapping in a ford four speed top loader or T-5, etc., for blasting around the streets.
