I'm doing a few things to a 91 302 that I'm going to be swapping into my 94 f150. One of the things will be to swap the roller stuff out of my 94 into the 91 motor, so while I'm there I'm thinking it might be a good idea to put in a new timing set. I'm mainly looking at two sets on summit right now. Here are links to the two sets:
Which one should I go with or is there another set i should consider? My brother is helping me with this and said I should get a set that can be adjusted, so we can get the valve timing set right, so thats why I've been looking at these two sets.
Another thing that I'm wondering is if we should set the valve timing to the stock setting or maybe advance or retard it a bit, or will the computer not like it if that is done?
Agreed set the cam timing straight up. If you're looking for something to get a bit more power out of the motor add a set of 1.7 roller rockers, you may need to trim the baffles in the valve covers to clear the rockers below them during operation but otherwise there will be no issue with the EFI or extra parts needed.
Already have a set of Scorpion rockers on the way after you two actually suggested a set of 1.7 rockers. I figured setting the cam/valve timing the same as factory was the way to go. I've read that due to some tolerances that can be a bit off that you might want to get timing set with an adjustable timing set, so that you make sure that the timing is set just right. Thats the reason I'm looking at these two sets. I know the Summit brand set has billet steel gears and the Ford Racing set has a steel cam gear and iron crank gear, so knowing that the billet steel is stronger, would I be better off going with the summit set?
I have another question about this. I was pretty much set on ordering the Ford Racing timing set that I have linked to in my original post and then I was looking around on the Ford Racing site, and it says that I'd need a hardened thrust plate to run that particular set. There is another Ford Racing set that is a bit cheaper, that doesn't require a hardened thrust plate. Should I just go with the cheaper one or will the one I have posted be ok? I'd hate to wear out the thrust plate.
Another thing that I found is that some other timing chain sets have a thrust bearing included. Is that a remedy to having a harder cam sprocket than stock and needing to be able to prevent wearing of the thrust plate?
Sorry the FR web site is slow & so am i . LOL.... I would just use the standard FR chain & gears A302 ... You can use the other if you are building a racing motor or you just wan't to...up to you....Lew
Thanks, I think thats what I'll do. The motor will eventually get maf, a cam, and gt40 heads, but for right now the only real upgrade is a set of the 1.72 scorpion rockers that you had suggested. You are right about the FR site being slow, or more so that it locks up on me all the time.
