ok i decided to tear into the rearend of my truck yesterday to change the axle seals (wheel seals, whichever you decide to call them). its a 90 f250 with the 10.25 semi floating rear
anyways i get the cover off and let it drain, then start to unbolt the pinion shaft lockpin, pops loose like normal, keep turning it and part of it comes out, part of it is still in, long story short, i got it out but now need to know where to find a new one at. Any ideas anyone?
all 10.25 differentials regardless of whether they are open or limited-slip use the same cross-shaft and retaining bolt/pin for it - go to a junkyard for cheap parts, or call up Randy's Ring and Pinion to see if they have the retaining bolt/pin (I know they got the shaft for like $19 which is a very good price). Dealership may also have the parts...
Your local Ford dealer should stock the Pinion Shaft and the Lock Bolt.
The bolt snapping in half when removing it is a very common problem.
Using a torch to heat the bolt up will soften the thread locking compound
that is used on the threads of the bolt can help in the removal of the bolt with out snapping it.
A new locking bolt should have thread locking compound all ready on it. If it doesn't use some
Loctite and torqe the bolt to 15-30 Ft. Lbs.
cool, i think i will give the stealership a call and see what they want for one, but also just might play in the junkyard for a bit ( i havnt had a good reason to go lately lol ) and see what i can find to mod up for my truck
well i got the chance to take a ride to the stealership, after telling them what i needed and answering some completely unrelated questions, i got the lock bolt, i was figuring that it was gonna cost a pretty penny, but to my surprise i got it for $1.61 after tax. thats even with the antiseize/threadlocker (whichever it is ) already on it, so as soon as the weather breaks ill be back in buisiness of getting it patched back together
The bolt is designed to snap at a certain amount of stress.
It's a shear pin.
Wait, what bolt are we talking about again? Cause the one that holds the cross shaft in place is not a shear pin, its only purpose is to keep the shaft from sliding out the carrier as it's turning while going down the road - there's no real load on the bolt, and even if you were right and it was indead a shear pin can you imagine the carnage in the axle if it snapped while the diff was turning?
dunno if its a shear pin or not, i figured the same thing, its only purpose is to hold the big pin, and shouldnt have any real load on the lock bolt, but for under 2 dollars, still not a bad deal for a new one
