But it's not me, I've been here forever. It's my Nephew, he's a good young man and just bought a new to him 1994 7.3 IDI powerstroke and has tons of questions. He wants to learn and I suggested he let you guys help. I know a little about the the 7.3 psd's but not the older ones. Help him out if you can and steer him in the right direction.
i am zx250s nephew and i relly want to learn a load on the idi 7.3 it has 230,000 miles had 229,000 when i bought it i wanted to gather opinions on the truck the guy who owned it ran rotella 15w40 he said he changed it every 3500 miles it didint do any hard pulling no gooseneck hitch just tell me everything to educate me good thx
Barry mentioned it being an IDI. I had an '88 F350 7.3 IDI but only had it for a few months. IIRC, the glow plug controller tends to go bad so most people just replace it with a manual button for the GPs. Mine was setup that way. Oh yeah, NEVER use ether to start them! WD40 will help out and be safer for your engine.
Ok, I've seen and driven it, it has a turbo, no intercooler, it has a powerstroke cover on top and other than that, I dont know. Adam my have gone to bed by now, he is still in school.
Well first you need to find out if it's an IDI or a powerstroke....being a 94 it could be either or as 94 is when they started making the powerstrokes and if it is a 94 IDI then it has a factory turbo setup.......pictures of the engine would help
Not positive on the badges, but it does have the power stroke cover on the intake and looks like the top picture. I'm on my phone and cant see real well, but i dont see the turbo on the bottom picture and I know he has a turbo, smaller than mine and no intercooler but for sure a turbo. Also, the vac pump is located as in the to pix. Thanks for all the help, to old for me to know much about it and give him the advice he needs.
Does it have Powerstroke badges on the fenders ...?
That's not a good indicator. The early PSD's had the same "Turbo Diesel" fender badging as the IDI.
If you can see an injection pump in the center above the intake manifold with metal tubes snaking to each cylinder, it's an IDI. The plastic housing on the engine has the air filter in it.
The plastic cover on the PSD has a flip up lid that has a round cover, which is the fuel filter. The air filter is remote mounted on the inner fender.
Oil fill on the 94 IDI is at the top center of the front cover. It is in the RH valve cover on the PSD.
If it say's Power Stroke Diesel on the top cover, that pretty much settles it.
To be honest, when i looked at it last week, we were looking at reasons the brakes are not working, why it is not staying in four wheel low and some possible front end issues. The air filter sits just like the top picture, but with a plastic tube to inlet on the radiator support near battery. The vacuum pump sits the same as the top picture and we think that is the problem with the brakes. Dont remember the engine looking a lot different than my 99PSD except the smaller turbo and missing inter cooler, but wasn't looking real close. I know the PS pump is at the same location as mine. Thanks, and now you see why we need your help.
I think that picture is of a much newer PSD than 94. It looks like my 99. I think the first picture is what Adam has. He will be home from school later and can help answer the questions. Hopefully we can get him to post some pictures of the engine and go from there. Thanks again for all the help.
