chugging, hesitation..

Ok, coming down from Seattle today on I-5 I was rolling along at 70 manual throttle. Rolled up a little hill, the engine would chug or hesitate. Then on another hill, cruise control on, it did it again. This time when the tranny down shifted to keep rolling at 70, it stopped, (the chugging) and cruised right up over with out missing a beat. ECT 192 EOT 203

EGR opening and closing? Any thoughts?

Hasn't or doesn't do it running around town.

Thanks.

List some more specifics like mods, miles, etc.

Might be the ICP

Pull some codes, do an italian tune up and see if it clears issues like carbon and rusting turbo sticking.

No codes listed. Italian tune up? Last Friday pulled 8800lbs 300 miles from Medford Oregon to Portland, Oregon. 4 passes. Each about 1000 ft. elevation change. No problems. Been "hammering on the throttle" before leaving town last week.

Run Power service diesel clean (grey bottle) every tank. Buy my fuel at mass quantity fuel stop. ( Pilot on I-5 in Central Point Oregon ) Oil changed 500 miles before trip.

checked for water in fuel, none.

Fuel filters changed 6000 miles ago. All OEM filters

ICP was running about 2300-2800 ( highway speeds)

Volts while running down highway 13.9-14.2

Thanks

When you cleaned the EGR valve, did you clean the EBP tube and the MAP sensor hose?

No I didn't. Is there a link in your spec sheets for this? Will do it!

There are links to pictures of the sensors and the tube/hose in the spreadsheet. I have them in one of my albums also.

It may be a long shot because it sounds more like a VGT actuator (or turbo) or maybe IPR issue (at least to me), but it is pretty easy to clean them.

So I pull that tube off and clean it out. My IPR while cruising down the highway was reading between 44% 50%. At idle my IPR sits at 22%

Thanks for your input.

ipr at idle is good. anything under 24% is spec. Icpv should be about .82 or so and idle, over a volt and its bad

just a little note the trucks have some knowen issues with speed contoll and surging going up and down hills. that would be somewhat normal operation.

Not sure if or how to measure icpv

Well, that would be kinda the reason when it down shifted, it cleared up. I guess.

Should I still look into clean the MAP tube as suggested? I should anyway just to learn a little more. Don't mind it.

Thanks everyone for the inputs.

IF you can moniter icp voltage that would be icpv. there is a way to do it and it is listed in the 6.0 info/tech folder. I woudl post a link to it but Im not sure were it is as I have never looked in the folder (sorry to admit that).
It would not hert to look at the ebp, ebp tube and map hose. also check the map port in the intake. you may even want to remove and clean the IAT2

next time try it w/o speed controll on to varifiy what I said. I think the speed contoll on the diesel trucks kinda sucks unless your on flat ground.

The first time it happened I was manual on the throttle. I'll look into cleaning the IAT2.

Thanks again.
