I have a 66 F-100 with a 390 2 barrel in it
I was going to replace it with a 460 but I decided I'd build this motor first.
What intake manifold/carb would you suggest?
and what cam.
I want it to be fast.. I drag race and would like this to be fast but yet still streetable.
I found a set of headers for free.
So I got that taken care of.
Also any other suggestions would be helpful, as I don't know much about these motors.
I run the crane 343801 cam and it pulls hard a little past 5500 rpm. The idle is very streetable but still a little lopey. I would recommend the performer RPM intake or the blue thunder intake if you want to spend 500 bucks on it. Make sure the oiling mods get done and the bottom end is secured with ARP bolts. The edel heads are a great upgrade. I am going to go with a bigger cam pretty soon. There are tons of options. With a few more details like how much power you are shooting for and how much you are willing to spend we can give you much more specific details.
Well here's a bit more info..
Power... I want all the power I can make
Cam... It can lope til it flys for all I care :P
And price... I dont want to spend anything, but I know FE's are high. lol So Id say less than 700 bucks tops. Less if I can.
If you upgrade cams, I'd gladly buy that one from you. Let me know please.
Also... about heads.
Im going to port a set of heads myself, and have everything else new put on them. Is this worth it?
I can do heads pretty well. Ive done several sets of heads with a friend for 302s, 351W, 460 so I shouldnt have a problem.
I am in korea until next year so I won't be doing the swap anytime soon. I would just do the cam, intake and exhaust work. Pay more attention to the exhaust side of the heads and little to the intake. You would be doing much better with 1.65" exaust valves. Hog the bowls out pretty good. There are others who know much more about doing headwork to the FE so I will let them post that info.
I plan on putting in as big of valves as I can. and wollering the heads out as far as I can.
I have a set, and the truck I sold w/ the 352 in it... I can get those heads back as he isn't using the motor. And he has as et of like 427 hi po heads or something of that nature. How much better are they?
The biggest valves you can run in a 390 is 2.09 X 1.65". Any bigger and you will just be shrouding the valves and impeding airflow. 427 heads have 2.19 X 1.73" valves and they will not clear the bore.
You will get more than twice the gain from going bigger on the exhaust than the intake. Whatever you do leave the floor of the intake alone. There isn't a whole lot of meat there and it does not improve airflow as air doesn't really touch it anyway.
I HAVE A PERFORMER MANIFOLD ON MY 390 WITH A 750 EDELBROCK PERFORMER CARB IT RUNS PRETTY GOOD BUT I THINK ONCE I FIGURE OUT WHAT CAMSHAFT I WANT THE MOTOR WILL BE A LOT MORE PEPPY. OTHER WISE A 750 IS TOOOOO BIG WITH OUT CHANGING OUT STOCK CAM!!! HECK IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE I ONLY HAVE 170 MILES ON THE MOTOR.
read the posts here about cams.
They suggest good cams
Also, not to be picky, but a post in all capital letters doesn't look professional
Just a suggestion, not trying to be rude
