Well, I'm still having problems with Beast. Will not start cold without ether. When the truck is at operating temp it won't even make it a full rev before it catches and runs. I knew that it would smoke a little at idle, but with the stack i never knew which side. I now know that it's the drivers side. After much discussing it's been narrowed down to either low compression or a worn IP, but nothing is ruled out.
What I've done:
New Injectors - helped with the smoking, but didn't eliminate it
Checked GP system - Everything works like new, no controller (manual burn)
Eliminated fuel leaks - or so i thought, but it's not my problem
To get it to start without ether I would have to have it pluged in for 3 hours AND burn the GPs for 15 seconds....on a 70* day...
I fully intend (like the last 5 weeks) to take it this weekend and get the compression checked. I know it's getting fuel, and i'm sure it's turning over fast enough.
i agree.normally id say its the cables, and for sure check them first.but that has that distinct starter drag sound to it.i bet she's the original '86? poor cables or weak batteries.i dont like the sound of the starter for some reason.gut feeling i guess.
IDIDieselJohn's sounds right! see how fast that sucker spins compared to yours? so fast it sounds like its running when cranking (without the exhaust noise/and rattle of the diesel of course.)
it should fire sooner than that, but he explains he had 3 bad GP's.but listen to her turn over.thats what your after right there before you worry about anything else.until you get it to spin fast like that, don't even be concerned with it actually firing and running yet.
Maybe i should add that when it's cold, it won't even try to start. Not at all like IDIjohn's 90 F250, which cranks slow, but picks up a few cylinders at a time. Mine produces smoke at the tailpipe, but not one cylinder will fire until i give it some ether. Yet when warm it fires off right away.
That sound like the IP? Starter not turning fast enough? Low compression?
yeah! #5 post sounds way better.phew, thats good.i wouldn't worry about having that starter tested now.man, corrosion city hey.
now GP testing and fuel testing.
in the morning, unscrew the fuel filter and see how full it is.
I tested the GPs individually with an ohm-meter. Battery ground to the electrical connector was .8 ohms or less each.
I won't have time in the morning, but i'll check after work (barring rain). I'm sure it will be full. When i try to start it there is white smoke from the tailpipe in a matter of a few seconds.
Is it possible (should say likely) for the IP to not be able to produce enough pressure to atomize the fuel when cold, but when warm be able to produce the proper pressure?
try and get up a little earlier? all you need is like 5 extra mins.
see,the reason you want to check it in the morning is for air intrusion.
after sitting all night, the fuel has time to drain back to the tank.if you look at it after you have the truck running, its going to be full because your pump has been filling it see?
was;
".8 ohms or less each." when cold? and how much "less" were the others?
when you push your manual button, did you test each GP line to see if all where getting power?
If it cranks on a half a turn with either in the morning and keeps running, I would not think you have an air problem. If you are getting white smoke soon after hitting the starter, that pretty much eliminates air intrusion as the problem.
I'm leaning towards the gp's not getting hot enough or possible low compression.
If you have fuel and it still wont start and spins as fast as yours, you either have a massive compression problem or glow plugs are not getting enough power, or they are dead. what brand gps are in there?
