Broken rear spring
Mechanic called me today and told me that the clanking noise I'm hearing is from a broken rear spring. They want to install "quick struts" for $510.
Is this really necessary? I've been driving it like this for weeks and the only difference I've noticed is the clank noise when I hit a bump.
If this is necessary, is this a pretty easy job for a DIY'er?

do 2002's have coil rears with irs? or is that just the expeditions with irs?
either way, to the o/p, between this and your other post, i say again take it to another shop. if this is the same one telling you that bald tires on one end of an awd will destroy your center diff, he might have his head up his *** about your noisy broken spring

I assume they're coils...
But that mechanic is probably picking every little thing cause he knows you probably don't know any better, and he can charge you ridiculously for the work.

He probably has a 2 door..... They carried over the solid rear axle for a few years after the 4 door switched to IFS in 2002. But most of the 2 door models used a composite monoleaf. If the leaf was actually "broken"......you would think it would be noticeable.

Its not a broken leaf spring.. A quick strut is a replacement for a broken strut.
