After getting off the highway when towing my 5000 lb boat, the engine runs like the O2 sensor isn't operating properly. Engine runs rough like it is cold. No problems when truck runs without load. Is this normal? The O2 sensor is brand new. Everythng runs just fine before the highway and after it has cooled down. Any thoughts please?
I've had a similar problem when towing my boat in the mountains.
Runs great, until it doesn't.
Talked it over with my mechanic, they couldn't find anything.
The best suggestion I've gotten so far is to purchase a code reader to keep with you in the truck, and then when the problem shows up, park and try pulling the codes/running self-test diagnostics right then.
If there were any codes present they will still be stored in the Continuous Memory as long as there is power to the PCM. Pull the codes now regardless if there is a check engine light or not.
