I have a 93 Areostar with 4.0 L , 131 K miles without distributor. It was running fine until last week. It started to stumble at idle and at highway speeds. I have not done anything to this truck since I bought it 2 yrs ago. So after reading your threads, I changed the following: plugs, wires, O2 sensor, throttle position sensor, and idle air mixture sensor. The plugs were Autolite double platium and the wires were 8MM of good quality. After all this the engine has alot more power, and runs OK on the highway but let off on the pedal and the engine starts to miss badly. I was going to pick up a code reader at the auto parts store but the guy asked me if the check engine light was on, and it wasn't. After I put the throttle position sensor and Idle air mixture sensor in, the engine light came on. I am ready to give in an take it to a shop, any ideas on what else to do ?
Thanks
I found out that if the engine is cold and i start it, then the engine seems to run a lot better (doesnt miss as much). As engine warmed up the engine started to stumble to a point where it would die. If i let it cool for an hour then it will start up again and do the whole thing all over again. Im thinking that my problem might be the coolant temperature sender. Any thoughts?
many codes will not turn on the CEL...please pull codes and post to forum....search Aero forum for instructions how to pull codes with jumper wire for pre '96 OBDI ECU systems....
need KOEO and KOER codes and cylinder balance test...
these computer control engine systems can not be repaired by guess work and throwing parts at problems...
the "idle air mixture sensor" that you replaced, is this on the side of the intake plenum behind the throttle body?....
commonly referred to as the I.dle A.ir C.ontrol....it's an electrical solenoid that controls idle air flow to the engine by electronic pulse width signals from the ECU
pull the electrical plug off the IAC while engine idling, does it die immediately?
when engine is cold it is in "open loop" control operation with no sensors affecting operation, just default rich cold start operation much like old carb/choke operation.
96_ is correct, codes would help narrow down the possibilities. One thing you could check/do is be sure the connector for the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) was put back on after the recent repair work. Leaving it off causes a CHECK ENGINE light and also driveablility problems. While you're there, you might want to also spray the MAF sensor itself with a few blasts of electronic cleaner to see if this improves things.
Do you have an AutoZone? They will scan it for free.
Did you adjust the TPS when you replaced it? My TurboCoupe required a voltmeter to set it up right, I assume the Aero does to - maybe not.
You didn't mention the fuel system. Did you check the fuel pressure? If you don't know when it was changed last, you should replace the fule filter.
Engine missing? Yikes! It's a big thing about three feet around. They are sneaky but I found mine hiding under a bunch of paper in the yard. Another time it was found near a Mustang, clearly pining for a relationship.
I have been able to keep mine under control by using a canine choke collar around the throttle body. Remember, they are "pack" animals and have a strong herding instinct. If you can't show the thing you are the "alpha" male, your motor will cause problems for other owners in the neighborhood. I have heard that there have been cases of several found milling around trash cans in the morning and many owners will blame you.
Do not believe any of the other posts here about voltmeters, codes and other arcana. Your engine needs a firm hand and a stern look as you walk up to it in the morning.

Does a distributor-less 93 4.0 have a Camshaft or Crankshaft sensor?
The reason I ask is because I just got done fixing my Son's 87 Olds Cutlass Ciera with a 2.5 4cyl. It had a Crankshaft Senor that went bad. As it warmed up it started breaking down and caused misfiring.
I called around today to get the truck scanned. Im going to take it in to get the codes read and see what happens on monday. I will let you guys know if anyhting shows up.
I have the same problem still, but in reverse. It stumbles off idle and when I accelerate ie pass off hwy speed. Runs great at hwy speed 120 kph. I have changed the MAF as it was the code that came up. But no go. 157$ down.
