This is starting to look pretty complicated for a toy. It's not as if I'm going to go to work as a truck driver! My fate is pretty well sealed in my current situation. I'm still going to watch this truck sell. If it doesn't get crazy, I'll figure out what to do with it if I buy it.

They specifically mention air brakes--if you pass with an air brake equipped vehicle, you're good. If not, you are restricted to non-air braked vehicles. That's the way I read it, so in this case if the OP uses this vehicle, which has air brakes, he will be good.

As far as variances state by state, beats me, but looking at Washington, Ca, and NY, it appears most of the variations have to do with prior license catagories that were superceded by the CDL, and certain other exemptions for agriculture or school districts for example.

You are incorrect.......

Don't know where you're from....But in Washington, you can get a B License, without air brakes, and you are restricted to hydraulic braked vehicles.

For the B license, Air Brakes are a separate endorsement...

For the class A, air brakes are included, and are one of many sections of the test...

No Sir, you are incorrect.

It does not matter what state you are from when it comes to this because this part is standard as set up by the feds.

There is no difference between a class A and a B when it comes to air brakes, both licenses can be had with or without an air brake restriction.

Whoa.... Didn't mean to start an argument! Looking at WA State's licensing website, I don't see a mention of air brakes in the licensing parameters. Basically, is it over 26,000 GVW, combination or carry more than 16 passengers? My interpretation is that I would need a class B endorsement.

No arguments, just having fun...Crete is correct you can get the A without air brakes..

Think big gooseneck trailer with electric brakes pulled by pickup or med duty truck..

You need a B with air brake "endorsement"

I don't know the max gallons before you need a tanker endorsement...you would need to check the size of your tank, and check the regs...

The 16 pass deal is for buses...different endorsement..

Over 26,000 GVW is when you need the CDL

I have to believe that the C900 has air brakes, what a pig if it does not, so that is why yoou need the air brake endorsment.

I have a Washington state CDL, class B, with the optional air brake and tanker endorsments. This CDL is valid in all of the of the states, BUT logging and hours of service vary if you are in Alaska or Hawaii.

Good luck with this, it is a bit of work, but you could start a new career as a truck driver when you are done!

Well, my son went to the auction and stood guard. He called me when the auction was 10 cars from the fire truck. Just as I was getting ready to ride my bike 5 blocks to the auction yard, a long time customer pulled in to look at my cars for sale. I was able to get them on a test drive with advice to "Go to Costco". We bought the truck! I'll try and sneak it back to my lot later today. Now I better sell the 2010 Subaru to pay for this little moment of weakness.

check into registering it as a historical vehicle. I live in Calif. and had no problems getting historic plates for a 56 ford f600 and a 65 kenworth 922
A historic vehicle has no gvw on the reg. since it can't be used for commercial purposes. Great purchase, I know you'll have fun with it..

side note: the american truck historical society has truck shows that you could attend with your c900.... just had the national ATHS truck show in pleasanton ca may 27-29 http://www.centuryfarm.org/gallery/m...2884&g2_page=9 link to pictures of the truck show

Nice battle wagon. It looks to be pretty much complete too. I can see hard sleeves and a hose reel. If it's capable of pumping water you might want to find a stream or pond just to try it out. Pump is likely rated at 750 gpm or higher. It also has Storz adapters on the pump intakes which tells me it served in an area with a good municipal water system.

According to the papers on the truck, it can pump 1500 gpm. We still don't know how to set up the pump or any of that stuff. We realized that much of the equipment had been disconnected or had fuses removed. A fan, the windshield wipers, and the lights on top were disconnected, but are reconnected now (except the fan). There are a million unplugged wires under the dash. He's currently looking into getting collector plates. We think this meets the requirements:

To use collector plates, vehicles must be:
  • more than 30 years old.
  • capable of operating on the highway.
  • owned and operated as collector vehicles.
Collector vehicles may not be used for:
  • commercial purposes or to carry a load
  • regular transportation in the manner of a fully licensed vehicle.
