She just completed several weeks of the school's driver's ed program - including 2 weeks drive time with the school instructor. Today was just an eye test and photo op for the actual license that comes in a little holder indicating she's a newbie.
Then, for the next 6 months, there are qualifiers about when she can drive and who she can have with her.
Second 6 months gets a little more lenient, then next June, she's automatically a full-fledged driver. No additional testing needed.
Wow! Sounds like you folks have a really comprehensive program for new drivers!

Bruce!! Long time no chat... Yep, we like it that way - gives them plenty of time to get more comfy with the experience, instead of turning 16, handing them the keys and praying for the best.
Oh yeah, there's a whole check off list we need to complete with her-- day driving, night driving, dusk driving, driving in the rain... For the 1st 6 months, she has to have a licensed driver over the age of 25 with her in front and no more than 1 other person in the back seat.
I'm taking her out later today... so if I'm not on here this evening, you'll know it didn't go well.
I wish PA would do something similar. We only did 6 months with someone under permit, then you got your license after a road test with a state trooper and there you go back in the day when I got mine. But I think that's changed just a little now, but it's still nowhere near as comprehensive. I don't know what it is, but some kids just don't seem like they're ready to be unsupervised behind the wheel of any vehicle - maybe the added guidance would be good for them.

Oh my, think positive, lol
Be sure to take her cell phone away from her or install a sync radio in her car.
Well, she's already saying she feels more comfortable in the Explorer as opposed to the Impala they have as the Driver's Ed car. Sits higher, feels more secure, so that's a good thing. And we're in no hurry to get her on the road (she hasn't found a job to worry about getting to and from yet), so can take our time with the training.

Oh yes, already had that discussion - and as part of the driving sessions, they train them to put the phone in the back seat so it's not a reachable distraction.
