Thanks F250 it all makes sense to me now. I only follow your instructions for studs that I convert to threaded studs. If I replace them with pressed in ones, I just torque them to spec. Basicaly everyone was right.
I had the problem on mine when I put a different head on and put the rockers back on. They are the pedistal style. I torqued them down to the books specs fired it up and it sounded like a diesel running. I freaked! My girlfriends grandpa is a really good mechanic and looked at it and said get some washers and put under the nuts for shims. Did that and fired it up and quiet as can be.
Got it done. I ended up replacing 2 studs with the same press-in style, and I replaced all of the pushrods. Everything else looked pretty good after I cleaned it all up. It is so quiot now that you can't even tell if it is running from inside the cab. Now I have to readjust the carb and everything, because I still get a little shudder when I rev it a little bit and try to hold it. Might be the timing too, because I was adjusting it before as well.
Glad to hear you got it all back together. I know what you mean about sound. When I just replaced all my lifters to reduce the clacking, the sound difference was night and day.
