from 10 miles 10 142k when the tranny finally took a crap, anything lower then 95 octane empty it would ping, even pulling a small cement mixer, 97 octane. if trying to pull over 5k it was 97 plus 3 bottles of octane booster and it still pinged like crazy when trying to accelerate.
Ripping aside, that is a sticky governor in the injector pump. Try the ATF trick to see if that clears it up. Usually it does. Not even remotely caused by air intrusion.
Get a new fuel filter and fill it with Auto tranny fluid (no synthetic or type 5) then start it up, and drive it around for an hour or so. If all goes well, you should clear up on its own. Running a fuel suppliment like stanadyne lubricity will prevent this from happening.
Not sure if the DOT folks down there are crazy about checking fuel, but I have to also warn you about the remote possibility you could get nailed for running marked fuel because ATF is red. Although to date I have never heard of anyone being charged or convicted of running ATF as a fuel additive.
