This morning i was headed up Daniels Canyon in Utah (US-40 not sure on the grade but it's steep) and the truck just didn't seem to go like it should. No load and the truck (in sig) was empty. I was able to maintain about 60-70 up most of the canyon til i got towards the top where it gets the steepest and the truck really seemed to bog down to around 50 or a little lower. I was in overdrive and when it started to bog down so i shifted out of OD and seemed to help some but not a ton, still seemed to creep over the pass. Maybe i should have down shifted sooner?? But it seems that in the past i was able to fly over the pass in overdrive at about 65 -70 unloaded before. EGTs where around 800-1000* the whole time up the canyon with boost always between 5-15 lbs or so, in overdrive, so seems normal to me. I also noticed the tranny temp was a little warm, about 120-130* over ambient (outside temp according to overhead console said 35-45* and tranny was runnin about 160 at the hottest), but the canyon is pretty long and steep so i would think that would heat it up some, but unloaded i would think it wouldn't be that bad. Once at the top and cruisin about 70 over a few miles over flat terrain it cooled back down to about 85-100* over ambient so that seemed right.Tranny fluid changed last week.
Empty at WOT i can get 22lbs of boost with EGT's of around 1100* with the set up sig, so that seems normal too.
I tow a boat and camp trailer over the summer up that canyon alot and if i would have had one on today i would think it would have really struggled.
What do you guys think of the scenario? Normal? am i losing my mind and expectin more out of her?! This site has made it hard to just "fold in the mirrors, turn the radio up and drive" if you know what i mean! Always lookin for problems....
I think you are in the low power cateory, with your mods I can't see you struggling up anything esp. w O/D off....................check for boost leaks and leaky up-pipes? first............................. check out some custom tunes PHP, beans, swamp..............ect ect
Tunes aren't going to fix the problem. A totally stock truck should not exhibit the power loss characteristics he is describing, let alone one with the mods he already has. Those tranny temps seem a little high, but without an aux cooler or larger cooler that may be normal. Did it feel like the torque converter might have been slipping? rattling noise from under the truck?

I didn't notice any strange noises or feelings like that.
As far as a boost leak, wouldn't that give me really high EGT's with not much boost at WOT?
And to clarify a little better i was is OD all the way up the canyon til probably the last mile which is the steepest, and when it started to kind of lug and my EGT's were getting too high so i had to back off a little and the truck slowed to where i had to shift out of OD which may have been too late for the truck to keep going. I know that with the super chips the EGT's climb fast too, so maybe that might be the problem. But it just seems like if i was stock i would of had a hell of a time gettin over the summit, especially with a load.
800-1000 empty seems a little hot to me. What is the altitude up there? 22psi is decent boost, not sure if that's "normal" with a SC or not. But other tuners are capable of over 25. Was there any black smoke? I'm thinking boost leak or possible fuel pressure issues (fuel restriction/weak pump). You said new filter, but do you have a way to check pressures?

Your right tunes are not going to fix the problem, but will be a step up from the superchip............... me truck won't pull a steep grade in stock or with my gold super chip like my PHP tunes will.
I have just replaced a set a of leaky up pipes, IH bellowed.........my truck didn't smoke, I could still get 24-25 psi................ My EGTs were high, that is what started me looking for a problem...............................I also did a FRx, HPx, PRI's, WW, ebv del, ccv mod, RR boots, 50 mod and retorque...

What kind of EGT's were you seeing with what boost. I thought that if you had below stock boost with egt's nearing the redline where signs of leaky up pipes.
That's tough question...................... depends on the tune, grade speed, throttle position................... I found that running WOT is bad just passing can spike it over 1250..................for the most part I can run the 80 DD tune on the mountain highways I travel, and keep it around 1150 doing 120 kph...................... I am fighting 37" tires as well..................I guess I will have more info the next time I go to town with my recent mods as listed above, and my new 4" down pipe............... should be interesting to see.
We will also see when I get my truck on the road (need to finish my IC pipes) if I am hitting higher boost numbers................ maybe my higher boost comes from my PHP tunes?
