Ok, I have my overhead console (2 door type). I have the display board sitting on my desk right here. So I have both chip 620 & 680 . They were completly off the board, laying in the plastic try. So can i reuse these chips? Also Ill i have is a reg soldering gun which when i saw how small this job is i had 2nd thoughts on doing it myself. Our nearby radio shach dosent have any soldering pencils so im out of luck. There is a local tv repair shop that does this type of stuff so i will have them do it. But can i give them the old chips that fell off along with a picture to show the placement? Im not sure if these can be reused... thanks Jeff
You'll find a lot of threads on this subject. I tried to solder mine back on but the fix would only last a few weeks. The issue is the resistors do not like high temp, so during normal operation, they get quite hot and the solder melts.
I ended up finding a thread that mentioned using non-surface mount resistors, which I picked up at Radio Shack. I soldered those in and have not had an issue for 6+ months.
You might want to skip reusing the surface mount type and get some of the other types for the repair, whether you do yourself or find a shop to do it.
Just got backfrom getting the overhead board fixed. He resoldered the original ones in place. I had the picture for reference. I had him recheck the others and we added sone more solder to the others for insurance. I reassembled the unit and its like new. Even brighter than before. Maybe a few others were getting loose as well. When I asked him how much.. he said ah 2 bucks... I gave him 10. He made it look so easy but im sure i would have buggered it up. thanks to this forum i saved mayself big time again.. Jeff
Hopefully, that's what is going on with my overhead console......it currently shows nothing. I'll try dismantling tommorow for a look-see. Thanks, guys
