Greetings, I am a new to the forums and recently purchased a 2001 F350, 7.3 PS, 2 WD, AT, DRW, no modifications, 102000 miles. 1st concern: It starts within 3-4 seconds of engaging starter and begins surging (like quick little blips of the throttle from 200 to 700 RPM) and when I just touch the throttle pedal the engine settles into a smooth idle at about 650 RPM. Once warm, when the engine returns to idle, it lopes and rocks some (like a fouled spark plug on a standard gas engine). I have read many of the posts and am confused as to what to check and/or mod first. I need all the help I can get. Thanks.
Sounds to me like it is "romping".. I solved my romp just by switching to Shell Rotella Syn 5w40 oil...a lot of us here on the forum use it.. It is costs more but you can extend the oil changes to make up for the cost..Get it at Walmart. The engine will start easy when it is cold and run quieter..( Your oil now when cold is too thick which the injectors don't like and don't fire evenly.. )
A Big Welcome to the Forum !!

Welocome to FTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It sound like the romps do a search and you will see most are cured be going to rotella 5w40 syn........................It worked for me I switch to dino at the end of winter and got the romps the next day.................... I hated it doing that, so I switched to rotella 5w40 Synthetic and they were gone........................ I beleive if it is warm out you will not get them,,,,,,,,,,,,, So maybe you can live with it until fall...........
I am new to site and have been reading about Power Stroke surging. I have a 97' and mine has similar characteristics. My truck will not do this until after truck has been driven and is warm, then shut off and restart, problem starts, give allittle pedal for about two seconds and everything is fine. I put truck into neutral and problem did not exist, so I adjusted range selector. Truck ran fine for awhile then started same old problem. Tried installing used switch(i know, bad idea), but did not help. I read about using different weight oil, but not sure if thats problem with range selector definetly making difference. Not sure if this little bit of info will help, but also after starting cold, engine idles fine, drive one mile and come to stop and engine rpm drops and sounds like loss of cylinders. As soon as you take off, everything is fine

As a few already suggested, just switch over to 5-40 rotella or any synthetic and it will solve your problem instantly. 99% Guarantee that is all you need to do.
