I only learned of this memorial last year. I had planned a ride up there over the summer but it didn't work out. My wife and I were coming back from the western part of Virginia yesterday after the graduation of the son of some good friends. I told her that since we were driving right by it, I wanted to stop in: D Day Memorial in Bedford, VA
It cost us $7 each to walk through it, but it was money well spent. Bedford, VA lost 19 men in the D-Day invasion, June 6, 1944, making it the community with the biggest (proportional) loss of any American community.
It was a somber reminder of the price of our freedom.
Had a chance to visit the D-Day memorial a couple years back. Well worth the trip. I think they are struggling a little financially since they are off the beaten path. Hate to see the thing go under because every generation needs to understand 6/6/40. If you are anywhere close by make a point to visit.
Hail to our home town heros. May their memory be blessed on this Memorial Day.
And congrats on bringing back your original avatar.....
Meanwhile, the United States has precisely ONE single WWI veteran alive today......Frank Buckles.....age 109. Lied about his age (he was 16) and joined the Army in 1917.
Jesus! Can you imagine? He truly IS the last man standing. When I see WWI footage...all grainy and choppy....and realize that there are still those around (very, very few....) who were THERE......I shudder.
